Hey guys!! We've learned about so many different countries this year and their music, but I've included some that we haven't discussed. Hope you enjoy!! :) Brazil:      My first country I wanted to highlight is Brazil. I chose this country because one of my teammates is from Brazil and as I was reading her first blog post and listening to the music, I was really intrigued and wanted to learn more about her country and her country's music. I really enjoyed listening to the Samba music and would love to experience the community and dancing in Brazil. The Samba Bossa Nova music I've included is a mix of Brazilian Samba music, which is fast-paced and rhythmic, while Bossa Nova is slower, more melodic, and jazz-influenced, but derived from Samba. Latvia:        My second piece is from Latvia in Northeastern Europe, near Russia. I chose this area as a culture to highlight because my old youth pastor and his family moved there to be missionaries. I was...

Music and Family

Hey guys! For my Music and Family section, I interviewed my grandparents.   Question: "What kind of music was popular when you were growing up?" Grandma: Elvis Presley was popular when I was growing up, he was a big thing. In the 60's the Beach Boys. Me: What about you, Grandpa? Grandpa: Well, I was born in 1946, so when I was old enough to listen to music, it was the Rock and Roll Revolution, so they had Elvis Presley was the biggest, but they had Jerry Lee Lewis, Fatz Domino, and all the 50's doo wop was popular, the stuff you hear on PBS today. Then, as a teenager, we had groups like the 4 Seasons that were at the top of the charts then, in the 60's The British Invasion. Grandma: The Beatles! Grandpa: The Beatles, The Dave Clark 5, The Rolling Stones, The Who, all these groups from England became big. Grandma: Jefferson Airplane. Grandpa: And then there was a whole Vietnam Era of Music of war protest even with the Folk music in the early 60s-65s. So, the Folk m...

Music and Tradition

MUSIC AND TRADITION The first piece of music I thought about when considering Christmas music played at church was Silent Night. This song provides such a beautiful picture of the birth of Jesus!! We sing it in our candlelight service at home every year. It was also a song I sang in chorus when I was in the 4th grade...Whether I was on key or not was up to the audience to decide, but I sang my heart out! This song is a classic that I enjoy listening to, no matter the season.  "Amazing Grace" is another song that is very dear to my heart. There is so much beauty and truth wrapped up in this song in reference to the grace we are shown by Jesus. I videoed this in Scotland while we were on a mission trip and actually the man playing the bagpipes is on the street that led up to the Edinburgh Castle, which is pretty cool! The song just fits so well on the bagpipes. While it is believed that the bagpipes originated in Ancient Egypt, Scotland is well-known for having many very skille...

Music and Me

Hello everyone!!  I'm Landon Garbade and I'm a Sophomore here at Converse. I'm originally from a very small town called Cassatt, which is about 2 hours from Spartanburg. I am an athlete on the volleyball team and am involved with our school's BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministry) and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). My sister is also involved with each of these organizations and she is a student here as well!  Both my mom and grandma were both educators, which encouraged me to consider a career in education. However, it wasn't until my senior year of high school that I fully decided to pursue a degree in education. I took Teacher Cadet and had the opportunity to work with a 6th-grade Math Inclusion class. I fell in love with the students and the atmosphere. I considered Special Education, but when I got to Converse, I decided to switch to Deaf Education and have fallen in love with everything about the major and the people I come in contact with!! I'm so ex...
